Obedience

AKC Obedience
Demonstrating the usefulness of a dog as a companion to humankind, AKC Obedience is a sport with rules, regulations, judges, conditioning, training, placements and prizes.

Text Box: The Greater Gainesville Dog Fanciers’ Association, Inc.®

A dog's training can begin at approximately four months of age. Others are not ready to settle down to a training until they are about five or sixth months old. Ideally, the sooner you start the better. It is much easier to develop good habits at an early age than having to overcome bad habits later on. We accept dogs of all breeds, and welcome dogs of all ages. We do not believe the old adage that you cannot teach an old dog new tricks.

GGDFA Classes are held once a week for an eight week period. Each class is one hour and is conducted on Thursday evenings beginning at 6:00. All dogs should be up to date on vaccinations. In this class the handler learns how to teach his dog to be a responsive, well-mannered pet using various positive training methods. At the conclusion of the eight week training session, certificates of completion will be given to all dogs. Dogs who have not yet mastered all exercises are encouraged to continue by repeating the class. How quickly your dog learns will be dependent upon how much time you spend working with him on each exercise. It is as essential for the handler to be trained as well as the dog. Many trainers will tell you that it is easier to train the dog than the handler.
