AKC Rally
The dog and handler complete a course, at their own pace, that has been designed by the rally judge, consisting of 10-20, depending on the level. Each of these stations has a sign providing instructions regarding the next skill that is to be performed.

Class objective: to introduce the basics of AKC Rally to all types of dogs and teach the signs needed to complete a Novice Rally Course and go on to earn the AKC title of Rally Novice (RN). In addition, to provide exercises to include in daily walks to stimulate the dogs brain for a more intensive walk leading to a tired dog at the end of the walk.

 

Followed by Rally Run-thrus for more advanced dogs, at $3 each.

 

Training Schedule for the 8-week class:
Week 1: Objective– to introduce exercises to increase dog attention on the handler that will allow the team to learn all the Rally Novice exercises. The moving exercises will be introduced at this time.

Week 2: Objective– to introduce more of the moving exercises and continue with attention exercises. Review of exercises #5-10 and to offer help and suggestions for problems encountered while practicing at home.

Week 3: Objective– to introduce the commands, sit and down, and introduce the exercises that require these commands. Review of exercises #5-12, #17-20, and to offer help and suggestions for problems encountered while practicing at home.

Week 4: Objective– to introduce the commands, front, finish right, and finish left, and introduce the exercises that require these commands. Review of exercises #3-12, #17-20, #25-28, and to offer help and suggestions for problems encountered while practicing at home.

Week 5: Objective– to introduce the four cone exercises. Review of exercises #3-20, #25-28, and to offer help and suggestions for problems encountered while practicing at home.

Week 6: Objective– to introduce the wait command and the last three exercise in AKC Rally Novice. Review of exercises #3-28, and to offer help and suggestions for problems encountered while practicing at home.

Week 7: Objective– to introduce two AKC Novice Rally courses and some tips on how to walk a successful course. Additional equipment needed is a way to restrain the dog while the handler walks the course, a soft-sided crate is recommended.

Week 8: Objective– to set up a mock AKC Novice Rally course that would likely be seen at a trial and have dog and handler teams compete in a friendly graduation celebration for prizes. Hand out information on upcoming AKC Rally trials and answer questions on how to enter a trial.
